Florida is like many states in that it has several enhancement charges that can be added to a DUI charge. An enhancement charge allows for harsher penalties when convicted. Florida considers DUI with a minor in the vehicle to be a very serious charge. On a first DUI with a minor conviction, a person may face fines up to $2,000, nine months in jail, up to 12 months probation, revocation of driver’s license for up to 12 months, community service, installation of an ignition interlock device for 24 months, and impoundment of the vehicle for 10 days.

32-year-old Thomas Raymond Giaimo, who is from Wales Court, was arrested early on Sunday after crashing an SUV into a tree on Mandarin Road. He is facing multiple DUI charges. At the time of the crash, he had a juvenile passenger in the vehicle.
At about 7:20 p.m., Giaimo was behind the wheel of a Chevy Equinox when he slammed into a tree, turning the vehicle on his side. According to a witness, he veered off of the road and made no attempt to avoid the collision with the tree. When questioned by police, Giaimo told them that he was “going too fast and hit the tree.”
The minor in the vehicle was taken to the hospital with a head injury. According to the police report, several open containers of alcohol were found in the vehicle.
Giaimo is a teacher at Kernan Middle School. He is facing charges of DUI property damage, DUI faculties impaired, DUI accompanied by a minor, careless driving, and possession of open containers of alcohol.
