Driving Barefoot May Lead to Reckless Driving Charge

Living in warmer, southern states like Georgia and Florida may mean that during the summer, people choose to wear flip flops. At times, they may even choose to go barefoot. However, many people have heard that doing so is illegal. Is it really? As it turns out, it’s not illegal to drive barefoot or with loose shoes such as sandals or flipflops in Florida or Georgia. It is illegal to drive with headphones, headsets, and earbuds, for obvious reasons, but there are reasons why police and other safety personnel advocate driving with shoes on. 

Florida Today reports that while it is not illegal to drive barefoot, there is good reason to wear shoes while driving. Going without shoes or wearing loose shoes could earn a driver a reckless driving ticket. If a driver gets into an accident and an officer who responds to the crash thinks that improper footwear played a part in the collision, that officer can cite you for reckless driving. 

Attorneys say that open-heeled shoes are susceptible to sliding off the accelerator or brake. Footwear that is left in the driver’s side floor can also get caught beneath the pedals. In addition to reckless driving charges, driving without shoes can cause a driver to suffer from serious injuries to their feet. 

Police and safety advocates also say that driving barefoot is better than driving in socks. Unless the socks have gripping on the bottom, they can slip off a pedal easier than a bare foot.
