His origins are debatable, but most date the origin of the internet sensation “Florida Man” to a 2013 Twitter feed that went viral. It concerned the story of a Floridian named Scott Simon who apparently butt-dialed 911 to be overheard discussing murder plans. What may have been a viable conspiracy charge soon devolved into lunacy with headlines such as “Florida Man Caught Picking Hallucinogenic Mushrooms with Alligator in Backpack” or “Florida Man Crashes Car into Business While Trying to Time Travel.” Florida Man has since become synonymous with strange tales, but as Newsweek reports, some “Florida Man” headlines are tragic.
21-year-old Troy Carrabis was killed when he fell from a 2019 Jeep Compass, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office reports. Carrabis was hanging from the window of the Jeep while the driver performed donuts in a cul-de-sac. The Jeep flipped and Carrabis was pinned beneath the vehicle.
At the time of the crash, there were eight other people in the vehicle. 15-year-old Aniello Somna was hanging out of another window at the time of the crash.
Margie Ngo and her husband, Andy Nguyen live in the cul-de-sac where the accident occurred. They rushed from their home when they witnessed the crash. They reported that two girls crawled from the wreckage and ran. “They didn’t even look back,” reported Ngo.
Three or four males who were in the Jeep were attempting to flip the Jeep back over. Nguyen was able to drag Carrabis from the wreckage, but he was unresponsive.
Ngo called 911 and Carrabis and Somna were rushed to a hospital in West Palm Beach. Carrabis passed away from his injuries.
