Alleged Drunk Driver Crashes Head-On into Police Cruiser in Gadsden County

Most people are aware of the dangers involved with driving while intoxicated, but the problem still persists. Although Florida ranks pretty low when it comes to DUIs compared with other states, there is still a serious issue. In 2016, there were 5,223 alcohol-related crashes. 417 of those crashes were fatal. Alcohol-related does not necessarily mean the driver was legally intoxicated; it includes crashes where a blood-alcohol level was more than 0.0%. Drugged driving is also a major concern in Florida. In 2016, 617 crashes were caused by drugged driving. That same year, there were 349 crashes where both drugs and alcohol were involved.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports that an arrest has been made in the drunk driving crash that injured a Gadsden County deputy. A man has been arrested whom police say was drunk when he crashed head-on into a Gadsden County Sheriff’s deputy on Monday.

The crash occurred at about 1:50 a.m. 37-year-old Harry Shoaf was driving a Ford pickup truck southbound on Thomasville Road. He ran the red light at Raymond Diehl Road and slammed into deputy Edward Campbell.

Campbell was ejected from the vehicle. The Tallahassee Police Department cannot say if Campbell was buckled in at the time of the crash. Shoaf is facing charges of DUI causing serious bodily injury, driving on a suspended license, and running a stoplight.

Thomasville Road was closed for hours as authorities worked the crash site. However, the road was reopened in time for the 7 a.m. rush hour.
