The United States Constitution gives the states the right to regulate certain functions not covered by federal law in Article Ten of the Bill of Rights. One function that is regulated by the states is driver’s licenses. All fifty states require that drivers have a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle on roadways. In Florida, driving without a valid license is a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a fine of up to $500. However, if someone is seriously injured or killed in an accident where the driver was driving on a suspended license or without a valid license, the driver could face felony charges.
The Tampa Bay Reporter reports that a Dover man has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run accident on State Road 574.
On April 21st, a Tampa motorcyclist died following an accident on State Road 574.
The crash happened at about 9:20 p.m. at the intersection of SR 574 and Tanner Road in Hillsborough County.
29-year-old Derek Lee Bazo was driving a 2008 Yamaha motorcycle west on SR 574. When he reached the intersection with Tanner Road, an eastbound 2004 Chevrolet Silverado turned into his path.
Bazo died at the scene.
It is believed that 24-year-old Roylan Perez Salas was driving the Chevrolet at the time of the crash. He fled the scene. Troopers and deputies located Salas at his home, which was nearby. Salas is facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving death and driving without a valid license causing death or serious bodily injury.
