Two Skydivers Plummeted To A Homeowner’s Yard When Their Parachutes Failed To Deploy

Skydiving is a sport that millions of Americans participate in each year. The sport is an exhilarating thrill for some and an accomplishment at facing a fear of heights for others. As thrill-seeking sports go, skydiving is relatively safe. The National Safety Council reports that a person is more likely to be killed getting struck by lightning or being stung by bees than to die while skydiving.

The United States Parachute association reported only 13 fatal skydiving accidents in 2018. With 3.3 million jumps, it is the lowest number of fatal accidents in the sport’s history. Tandem skydiving has an even better safety record with just one student fatality per 500,000 jumps over the past decade.

NBC News reports that video was recorded of two Florida skydivers that plummeted to the ground when their parachutes failed.

Brevard County Fire Rescue responded to a call at about 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday from a homeowner of the yard where two skydivers landed. They discovered that the two skydivers were conscious but suffering from major injuries. They were both airlifted to trauma centers.

The video depicts the two skydivers spiraling downward, accelerating as they fell. At some point, they tried to deploy their parachutes but failed. Instead, they hit a tree first and then the ground.

The jump was arranged through Skydive Space Center. The center boasts that it is home to the world’s highest jumps at 18,000 feet.

The incident is being investigated by the Titusville Police Department. The Skydive Space Center did not immediately return requests for comment about the incident.
