Tips For Motorcyclists In The Event Of An Accident

A motorcycle can be a fun and exhilarating way to get around, but due to their very nature, they have a high risk of an accident. Spring and summer are the perfect seasons for many motorcycle riders and many of them are out on the roadways. In 2019, the state of Florida reported 9,143 motorcycle crashes through October. 531 of these crashes were fatal.

One of the reasons that motorcycles present a danger is that drivers often do not see them. Another reason is that in a great percentage of motorcycle accidents, operators and passengers are not wearing helmets. Most motorcycle riders will be involved in a crash at some point in their lives and it is important to know what to do following the crash.

Gather Evidence

Although police will gather reports of their own, it is best if you also gather them yourself for your records. Get the names and information of all involved and any witnesses. Take pictures of the accident scene, including all vehicles.

Get the Police Report

Police will come to the scene of an accident and file a police report. You will need this both for your own records and to give to the attorney.

Visit a Doctor

You should visit a doctor even if your injuries are minor. Report all injuries to your doctor and keep a record of all doctor visits, follow up care advice, prescriptions, and other documents.

File a Claim

Florida’s laws requiring drivers to carry personal injury protection insurance does not extend to motorcyclists. If another driver was at-fault, you need to report the accident to your own insurance carrier to start the claims process.
