KSL reports that two Florida men who were in Utah for summer work were arrested for allegedly stealing a dump truck and taking it for a joy ride which culminated in their crashing it into a transformer.
Around 5:00 a.m. Monday, police and fire crews responded to a reported accident at 150 N. Paradise Parkway in Garden City, Utah, finding a dump truck that had crashed into a transformer owned by Rocky Mountain Power. They hit with enough force to ignite a fire, which local firefighters were able to quickly extinguish.
While the dump truck was empty, police approached two men on bicycles they noticed nearby. Both men appeared to be highly intoxicated and stated they had been drinking all night and noticed the fire while riding their bicycles. Surveillance footage from a nearby rental business showed the two men entering the business around 2:00 am, drunkenly operating power equipment for two hours, and finally absconding with the dump truck.
When asked why they had taken the dump truck and crashed it into the transformer, one of the two suspects simply shrugged and replied “intoxication,” according to the police affidavit. Both men were arrested for unlawful control of a vehicle used to commit a felony, criminal mischief, and trespassing. The driver was also arrested for DUI and causing an accident.
Both men stated their desire to return to Florida after completing their seasonal work.
