The Treasure Coast Palm reported recently on a Martin County accident that caused the death of an elderly man and has led to felony charges against the driver allegedly responsible.
A 35-year-old Port Saint Lucie man is facing felony charges of DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident involving death and vehicular homicide as of Monday morning. The original incident took place around 2:45 pm on November 26, when the suspect was driving a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica east on Kanner Highway (also known as State Road 76) near Cove Road. He rear-ended a Stuart man of 88 years of age riding a motorcycle.
The Stuart man was medically transported to Cleveland Clinic Martin South Hospital, where according to the crash report he later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect fled the scene of the crash, and although law enforcement officials tracked him down, the information about how they did so was not made available to press outlets. According to deputies of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, however, it is believed that the man was impaired at the time he caused the accident, as stated on the arrest affidavit for the suspect.
The suspect was taken to the Martin County Jail and has since been released on $95,000 bond.
