Kids are capable of doing some pretty amazing things. Because many children are fearless, sometimes they can also do things most adults wouldn’t even imagine trying.
According to a story appearing on the Heavy.com website, an 11-year-old boy in Baton Rouge stole a school bus and led 20 police officers on a chase through the city.
Eyewitness, Joy Gratny, shot cellphone video of the incident as the school bus and several police units flew past her vehicle on Sunday morning. That video has now gone viral.
“As it got closer and closer and closer, it’s a little boy in there, and he was laughing!” Gratny told reporters. “He’s like giggling on the way past Florida. So he gets right past me, and I see it’s a little boy!”
The chase lasted for approximately 45 minutes. Other videos of the pursuit show the school bus attempting to go through one of the city’s new roundabouts. The bus can be seen going over several curbs before crashing into a tree and a gas line in homeowner Libby Smith’s front yard.
Smith first thought that there might have been lots of kids onboard the bus. She was shocked to find it was just a little boy behind the wheel.
“Thank goodness he was o.k,” Smith said. “But, it was not your typical Sunday afternoon occurrence for sure!”
No one was hurt in the incident, and police were able to get the boy off the bus safely. The 11-year-old was immediately taken into custody. Even before legally holding a driver’s license, this young man is now facing several charges, which include theft of a motor vehicle, property damage, and assault.
Police say that the boy stole the bus from the Head Start Progress School. The bus can be started with a push-button rather than a key, making it easier for the vehicles to be stolen.
