Two Fatal Crashes In Lake-Sumter Area

The Daily Commercial reported on two fatal crashes last weekend in the Lake-Sumter area that combined for three fatalities in Groveland and Oxford. 

The first of the fatal crashes occurred around 7:25 p.m. on Friday, October 10, when a 54-year-old Clermont man was northbound on State Route 33 near where it intersects with Evans Avenue in a tricycle-style motorcycle. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, he attempted to pass multiple vehicles including a tractor-trailer, and collided head-on with an SUV driven by a 55-year-old Lakeland man. 

The motorcyclist was unhelmeted and did not survive the impact, being pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV’s driver was transported by airlift to Orlando Health in critical condition. 

Just before 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, another accident killed two teenagers on US 301. A 19-year-old Summerfield man was driving northbound on US Highway 301 with an 18-year-old Ocklawaha woman in the passenger seat. They were driving in the outside lane as they approached the intersection of County Road 216, only to lose control of the vehicle and travel across all traffic lanes and the center median before colliding with a southbound pickup truck. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, both died at the scene of the crash, but the pickup truck’s occupants sustained only minor injuries.
