The Tallahassee Democrat reported recently that a Leon County school bus crashed into a tree Tuesday afternoon, injuring the driver but fortunately resulting in no injuries for the children on board.
The incident took place on Tuesday, November 24, around 3:30 p.m.the afternoon. According to officials with the Florida Highway Patrol, a Leon County Schools bus was headed west on Morning Dove Road in Killearn Lakes when the driver of the bus reportedly suffered an unknown medical condition that caused her to suddenly and without warning lose consciousness.
The school bus veered off the roadway and onto the unpaved shoulder, then struck a tree alongside the road. The impact caused the driver to be trapped inside the bus, but she was extricated by first responders.
The bus driver was wearing a seat belt but reportedly still suffered serious injuries in the crash.
The bus was reportedly nearing the end of its route dropping students off after their school day at Killearn Lakes Elementary School, with only two students left aboard, children five and eight years of age.
Florida Highway Patrol, as a matter of policy, no longer routinely releases names of people involved in crashes because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, which grants privacy rights to crime victims.
