WJCB Channel 10 ABC News reported recently that a University of Florida student was killed last Wednesday in a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident in Gainesville.
The incident took place when a Jacksonville woman attempted to cross the road on the 2000 block of West University Avenue and was struck by a westbound motor vehicle, according to officials from the Gainesville Police Department. She was declared dead at the scene of the accident by first responders. GPD believes that the car that hit her was a BMW sedan that possibly headed north on NW 20th Drive after the accident and are asking anyone with relevant information, such as eyewitnesses, to call the Gainesville Police Department’s tip line at (352) 393-7700.
“We have in certain parts of this town very densely populated areas where folks are walking and riding their bikes,” stated the public information officer for the Gainesville Police Department. “All of us need to do a better job of being aware of our surroundings and ensuring that everybody can use the roadways appropriately, safely, and in a way where something like this doesn’t happen.”
The incident is being investigated by the Gainesville Police Department as well as the University of Florida Police Department.
