Today’s story may seem like something out of a Hollywood film, but it’s true. A man is now facing murder charges after deliberately ramming a police cruiser and killing the officer inside. The officer had just one shift left before retirement. Greenwich Time reports.
The accused faces nine charges, including premeditated murder of a law enforcement officer. Police were called to the scene because there were reports of the suspect walking around naked and breaking things. He attacked the officers, then tried to flee in his vehicle after he was hit with a stun gun.
The victim was parked away from this scene when it happened. The suspect drove across two lanes of traffic and slammed into the vehicle, trapping the officer inside. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The prosecutor on the case is seeking a grand jury indictment of the first-degree murder charge. Florida law requires this, but it may be some time before one can happen due to the pandemic. It is unknown if the state will seek the death penalty.
Our condolences go out to the family of the officer. We hope that the matter is investigated thoroughly and that justice can be reached.
