The Dothan Eagle reported recently that at least one person was killed in a motor vehicle accident that occurred in Washington County, a region in the Florida panhandle, on Monday, February 8.
According to officials with the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place on Monday, February 8, 2021 between 4:50 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) near the intersection of FL State Road 79 and FL State Road 20 in Ebro, a town in Washington County. A tractor-trailer, driven by a Marianna man 25 years of age, was turning left out of a warehouse complex located just north of SR 20 and the Ebro greyhound park to head north on SR 79, while at the same time a motorcycle, ridden by a Vernon, FL man 48 years of age, was headed south on SR 79 approaching the tractor-trailer.
The motorcycle struck the left rear of the trailer portion of the tractor-trailer and slid around 100 feet, ejecting the rider before it came to rest in the outside south lane of SR 79. The driver of the tractor-trailer was wearing his seatbelt and was uninjured. The rider of the motorcycle, who was not identified by law enforcement, was wearing a helmet but was killed in the impact.
In 2018, the number of motorcycle crashes fell 5% to 4,985. In 2017, 28% of the motorcyclists who were killed in an accident were intoxicated.
