WKRG CBS Channel 5 News reported recently that the casualty count continues to rise from Daytona Bike Week, with an eighth death occurring on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, eight days after the victim was hospitalized following a collision with a Volusia County Schools bus.
According to officials with the Daytona Beach Police Department, the accident took place between 3:40 p.m. and 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the intersection of Nova Road and Madison Avenue in Daytona Beach, Florida. The victim, a man from Daytona Beach 29 years of age, was riding south along Nova Road when he allegedly ran a red light at the intersection, striking the front driver’s side wheel of the bus as it made a left turn from eastbound Madison Avenue onto northbound Nova Road. While the victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, he suffered severe injuries and was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in critical condition. He succumbed to the injuries he had sustained in the accident eight days later. None of the students on the bus were injured.
Halifax Health officials noted that this year’s Daytona Bike Week featured a record number of trauma patients. At least eight people died during Bike Week and 150 people were admitted to trauma care, 91 of them directly related to Bike Week.
