People Weekly reported recently that a motor vehicle accident on Thursday, April 8, 2021 in the Gainesville area led to a University of Florida student being placed in a medically induced coma as he fought for his life.
According to officials from the Gainesville Police Department, the accident occurred along the 300 block of Northwest 13th Street in Gainesville, FL on Thursday, April 8, 2021 between 12:35 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. A young sophomore from the University of Florida, 19 years of age, was attempting to cross Northwest 13th Street when a vehicle hit him just outside the marked crosswalk area. He was rushed to the University of Florida Shands Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and placed in a medically induced coma.
The young man had facial reconstructive surgery scheduled on Monday, April 12, 2021 and has an intensive schedule of CAT and MRI scans and other procedures scheduled to help save his life and restore him to health.
At this time, few details have been released about the incident and how it occurred, but the Gainesville Police Department confirmed it was not a hit-and-run and that, though no charges have been filed, police do have the identity of the driver that hit the victim.
