News 4 Jacksonville reported recently that a driver was killed in the southern part of St Johns County during an apparent motor vehicle accident on the morning of Tuesday, May 18, 2021.
According to a press release issued by officials with the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred between 4:55 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 along the exit ramp to an Interstate 95 rest area.
For unknown reasons still under investigation, the SUV struck a box truck that was parked alongside the ramp, which pushed the box truck forward into a parked tractor-trailer. The SUV ended up wedged under the box truck, and a fire started amongst the wrecked vehicles.
County fire crews were dispatched to put out the fire. Troopers have not yet identified the SUV driver who died in the accident, nor the two truck drivers, although they did confirm neither of the two truck drivers, both of which were asleep, were injured in the accident.
The collision caused significant traffic delays during the morning rush hour in the southern Jacksonville area. The accident remains under an active and ongoing investigation.
