The Daily News reported recently that a tragic motor vehicle accident along the New York Thruway in Batavia, New York on the morning of Sunday, May 16, 2021 caused injuries to a pair of Rochester residents.
According to a news release issued by officials with Troop T of the New York State Police Department, the incident took place between 1:10 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Sunday, May 16, 2021 along the Interstate 90 component of the New York Thruway system, about two miles east of the Batavia exit.
A man from Rochester, 71 years of age, was riding a motorcycle with a woman from Rochester 21 years of age as his passenger. He attempted to avoid a collision with another vehicle that was coming to a halt in front of them because of a separate accident.
Both the driver and passenger fell off of the motorcycle and suffered injuries that were not believed to be life threatening, while the motorcycle itself caught fire.
The driver was airlifted to Strong Memorial while the passenger was transported there by ambulance. No tickets were issued for the incident, which caused significant traffic backups in the area. Batavia firefighters also responded to the accident scene.
