Whenever someone is hurt, and an ambulance arrives, we take it for granted that those who are injured will be taken to a hospital quickly and safely. However, for one patient, an accident caused their trip to treatment to become more complicated when their ambulance got into a head-on collision on the way to the hospital.
ABC affiliateWEAR-TV reports that an Escambia EMS ambulance was involved in a head-on collision along Interstate 10 on Monday, June 14, 202. It injured several people in the crash.
A spokesperson for the Florida State Patrol said a motorist driving a sedan at approximately 3:3.0 p.m. along Interstate 10 near the Pensacola Boulevard intersection struck an ambulance that was transporting a patient.
Authorities say a 78-year-old Mississippi woman driving a sedan westbound on the interstate crossed the median and collided with the Escambia EMS ambulance, which was traveling eastbound.
They transported the driver of the sedan to an area hospital for treatment of the injuries she suffered in the crash. She is currently listed in serious condition.
County officials say that an Escambia County EMS paramedic also suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were also taken to the hospital to be checked out.
So far, there is no word on what may have caused the accident or if the driver of the sedan may have suffered a medical issue just prior to the accident.
The accident is still currently under investigation.
