How Can Rain-Related Crashes in South Florida Be Prevented?
As fall is in full affect and winter weather is approaching, the first heavy rains and harsh weather can leave you feeling unprepared. It is easy to forget an umbrella when there is a chance of rain in the forecast, and it is also common to forget to prepare your vehicle for wet weather.
There are many rain-related crashes that occur every year. Although some are unpreventable, others can be avoided with the proper vehicle care and preparation. This can include:
- Checking your windshield wiper blades. When a vehicle has worn wiper blades, it can be hard for you to see the road. Worn wiper blades can cause streaking, which doesn’t allow you to see the road clearly and compromises your safety. Marie Turner, AAA auto claims manager, says “wiper blades usually work effectively for a year at most, and sometimes even less.”
- Checking your tire tread and pressure. Always be sure that your tires have the proper inflation for safe driving. It is also essential to check your tires for tread wear. When tires are worn, they are more likely to lose contact with the road. This can cause hydroplaning in a rain storm, which can lead to a loss of braking and steering and cause a Florida crash. Having the best possible traction will keep you safe during winter weather driving months.
- Confirming that your brake lights are working. During rainy weather, you need to do everything you can to improve your visibility to other drivers in order to avoid an accident. Make sure that your tail lights and brake lights are working prior to pushing down on the accelerator. This will help other drivers see your car during a storm and keep you safe while driving in rainy weather.
- Checking your headlights. It is critical to always use your headlights to drive in rainy weather. Check to make sure your headlights are working before driving.
When drivers check their headlights, tail lights, brake lights, tire tread, tire pressure, and windshield wiper blades, their chances of a rain-related crash is minimized. However, even the safest, most prepared driver can still get injured due to someone else’s negligence on the road.
