Michelin’s Tire Recalls – A History of Manufacturer Defects

Below is a brief timeline of events:

• Tire Recalls in 2013 – In July 2013, Michelin voluntarily agreed to recall 100,000 tires commonly used for SUVs and passenger trucks. The recall included specific sizes of the company’s LTX M/S 2, X Radial LT2, and Latitude Tour tires. The recall was initiated when a retailer noticed that some of the defective products had punctures in the sidewall. The holes caused the affected tires to deflate rapidly.
•  Tire Recalls in 2012 – In July 2012, Michelin announced a voluntary recall of roughly 841,000 tires manufactured under its BFGoodrich and Uniroyal brands. The manufacturer initiated the recall due to issues with tread-belt separation. This defect can cause quick deflation or tread loss. Both problems increase the risk of car accidents. Many of the tires were used on commercial trucks and heavy-duty vans, as well as some passenger vehicles.
•  Incorrect Product Labeling in 2009 – Michelin recalled about 800 of its Pilot Alpin tires. The products were labeled incorrectly, which is a violation of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration standards.
• Class Action Lawsuit Settled in 2008 – Michelin settled a class action lawsuit relating to its Michelin PAX tires on Honda’s Acura RL and the Honda Odyssey Touring Edition. The suit stated the tires were defective and prone to early wear. The suit included consumer victims from Florida, Illinois, Arizona and New York.
• Michelin Tire Recalls in 2006 & 2007 – In 2006, Michelin issued a recall on roughly 6,500 Pilot Sport tires. The tires were prone to air pressure loss, which can contribute to accidents. In 2007, the company recalled almost 20,000 motorcycle tires due to issues with tread separation at high speeds.
