Florida has a history of significant numbers of traffic accidents each year. Florida had the third highest number of traffic fatalities in the nation in 2012, second only to Texas and California, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
A new list published by TIME shows that Florida is, unfortunately, living up to its reputation. Of TIME’s list of the top 12 most dangerous intersections in the America, nearly 50 percent of the intersections that made the list are located in Florida. According to the study each of the Florida intersections saw six fatal crashes from 2003 to 2012. That is just one fatal crash less than the most dangerous intersection in America.
12 Most Dangerous Intersections in America
TIME analyzed nearly a decade’s worth of traffic accident data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The statistics show that the following 12 intersections are the most dangerous, i.e., have the most fatalities, in the nation.

- MO: Intersection of North Grand Boulevard and Montgomery Street in St. Louis

- MS: Intersection of Route 63 and Route 98 in Lucedale

Reasons Intersections are So Dangerous

In some cases, what’s most needed to reduce the risks at intersections is a complete overhaul of the roadway design. The Federal Highway Administration recommends the following engineering countermeasures to reduce some of the dangers at intersections.
- Ensure the lighting is adequate
- Address intentional violations
- Reduce the need to stop
- Improve signal visibility
- Increase the size of the lights
