Cracks in tire tread can increase the risk of a tire blowout when the vehicle is in operation. It can lead to loss of tire pressure, then tire failure, and then an accident in some cases.
Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company recently announced a recall of 48,512 Fortera HL P255/65R18 109S tires because of cracks in the tire tread. The cracks became evident during tire endurance testing inspections. The tires were manufactured between November 30, 2014 and January 10, 2015.
GM Recalls Vehicles Because of the Tires
These tires were installed on a number of General Motors vehicles. The tires were installed as original equipment on these cars. As a result of the tire problems, General Motors recalled several SUV models – the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave.
The company has already asked all of its dealers to stop selling the affected vehicles immediately. Of the 48,512 tires under recall, about 32,100 were made for GM crossover vehicles. The remaining tires are replacements.

Manufacturer Liability for Defective Tires
This is not the first recall of Goodyear tires. While there are no reported accidents related to this potential tire problem, consumers should be aware that a manufacturer may be liable should a defective auto part cause a wreck. This includes the tire manufacturer or even the vehicle manufacturer. For example, if one of these tires were to cause an accident in which a driver suffered injuries, then Goodyear and even GM may be liable.
