New Ignition-Related Recall for GM

Earlier this year, GM issued recalls for ignition switch and airbag defects. The car manufacturer has been under scrutiny ever since. There have been at least 13 fatalities and 32 crashes caused by the faulty ignition switches. At the same time, evidence has emerged that the company knew about the defects in 2012, long before the recall.

New problems have now arisen. It seems the switch isn’t the only issue in the ignition system.

GM Vehicle Owners Beware: Problems Continue to Grow for Car Manufacturer

Besides the switch turning off while driving, the key could come out of the ignition while the car is on. This can cause the vehicle to roll away and crash if a vehicle owner pulls the key from the ignition, believing the car is in park and off. As a result, it could injure occupants or pedestrians.

GM has received hundreds of complaints from owners of the keys coming out. One known rollaway crash occurred in a parking lot, along with one injury claim, according to media reports. So far, no further reports of injuries or fatalities.

The vehicles involved in both the ignition switch and lock cylinder recalls include:

  • Pontiac Solstice;
  • Pontiac G5;
  • Saturn Ion;
  • Saturn Sky;
  • Chevy Cobalt; and
  • Chevy HHR. 

GM indicates that two different suppliers provided the switches and lock cylinders. However, owners can have both fixed at the same time.

But this isn’t the only problem for GM. As investigations continue, more evidence shows the automaker knew about the defects. Some documents show GM knew about the bad switch and faulty airbags. But the company is also facing fines of $7,000 a day for failure to turn over all documents related to the recall. Federal investigators say this is a violation.
