The Orange County Board of Commissioners has approved a $5 million plan to improve pedestrian and bike safety on the major roads serving the University of Central Florida (UCF) campus. The plan includes the building and improving of mid-block crosswalks, sidewalks and bike paths in order to make their use safer and more appealing to pedestrian and bike traffic.
Over 50,000 students and staff rely on the roads to make their way on and off campus every day, many of whom walk or bike to navigate the campus. The university has seen many safety issues involving pedestrian accidents resulting in serious injuries, and about one death per year. The main problem is foot and bike traffic mixing with vehicle traffic near the two major roads by the campus entrance and along the western edge of campus.
Some of the enhancements will include better lighting, well-painted and textured pedestrian crosswalks, wider sidewalks and fencing within medians to discourage pedestrians from crossing the street mid-block.
