The Sun-Sentinel reports that a 20-year-old man from Davie has been charged for his role in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Dania Beach last year.
On Monday, June 28, 2021, police took 20-year-old Robier Font Osaba into custody in connection to a deadly hit-and-run crash on February 26, 202, at approximately 12:02 a.m.
According to a statement released by officials, the fatal crash happened in the 3800 block of Griffin Road in Dania Beach when the driver of a white Chevrolet van stopped in the center median. He and a passenger were attempting to assist another motorist that had run out of gas in the left lane of the road.
The three were standing in the middle lane of Griffin Road when Osaba, driving a beige 2017 Honda Accord LX, struck all three without stopping.
Paramedics arrived at the scene of the crash and took all three pedestrians to Memorial Regional Hospital. One of the pedestrians died nine days later from the injuries he suffered in the crash.
A Broward County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said that Osaba returned to his home, where he called his mother. He then returned to the scene of the accident three hours later in a different vehicle. He told Sheriff’s deputies where they could find the car that struck the pedestrians.
Investigators retrieved the Honda finding damage to the car consistent with a pedestrian /motor vehicle crash. After being taken into custody, Osaba told deputies that he didn’t see the pedestrians because he had fallen asleep at the wheel. The sound of the impact woke him up, and he fled the scene.
Osaba appeared before the court on Tuesday, June 29. He is being charged with failure to stop and remain at the scene of an accident resulting in a fatality and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury.
A judge has set Osaba’s Bond at $125,000. A court date has not yet been set.
