CBS News Atlanta reported recently that a Florida man suffered serious injuries after allegedly crashing into a law enforcement patrol vehicle on an electric bicycle late on the evening of Friday, December 4.
According to officials from the Pinella County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred between 11:20 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on the evening of Friday, December 4 when a sheriff’s deputy was traveling south on Belcher Road in a marked patrol vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, on a routine traffic patrol. He stopped at the traffic signal at the intersection of Belcher Road and Ulmerton Road, which was red.
The deputy stopped and then made a lawful right on red maneuver onto Ulmerton Road, but as he made the turn, the front corner of his patrol vehicle was struck by a man 29 years of age, riding an Ancheer electric mountain bicycle. The initial investigation indicates the man was crossing Ulmerton Road illegally against the traffic signal on his bike.
The man was medically transported to a local hospital for serious injuries to his right leg, while the sheriff’s deputy was uninjured. Investigators do not believe intoxication or impairment to be a factor in the accident.
