Fox Channel 11 News reported recently that a motor vehicle accident just after midnight on Sunday morning near the town of Mulberry led to the death of a young boy from Plant City.
According to officials from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred between 12:00 a.m. and 12:15 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) near the intersection of Florida State Route 60 and Coronet Road. A man from Mulberry was allegedly driving a Toyota Corolla compact sedan westbound on State Route 60 in the outside lane of the roadway. At the same time, a Wauchula man 42 years of age was traveling south on Coronet Road in a pickup truck towing a trailer, with two children as passengers, one 12 years of age and one 14 years of age. As the pickup truck entered the intersection, it pulled into the path of the Corolla, which had the right of way.
The impact ejected the driver and 12-year-old from the vehicle, while bystanders extricated the 14-year-old. The younger child was taken to St Joseph Hospital in Tampa where he died of his injuries. The older child was treated at Lakeland Regional Health Center for a broken collarbone, while the driver was treated at Lakeland for a broken neck and leg and is in critical condition.
The Corolla driver was treated at Lakeland for a broken leg, and was arrested for charges including DUI Manslaughter, two counts of DUI crash with a serious injury, DUI, and driving without a valid license.
