While many accidents on the interstate are caused by drivers who fail to stop when traffic ahead of them slows, there are many more that are caused when drivers attempt to change lanes. Driver distraction, speed, and even intoxicated driving can cause a driver to make unsafe lane changes.
These types of traffic accidents can lead to a sideswipe accident, a rear-end accident, and even in head-on accidents if the driver makes an improper lane change and crosses into oncoming traffic. In most situations, the driver making the lane change has liability in the accident, especially if it can be proven that they were acting in a negligent or unsafe manner.
The Ledger reports that a 22-year-old woman has been killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 4.
The accident occurred on Thursday morning on Interstate 4 just east of U.S. 98. The left rear of her car collided with the front of another sedan being driven by a man from Orlando.
Both vehicles rotated towards the median, where they struck a cable barrier. The second vehicle came to a stop. The woman’s vehicle continued into oncoming traffic on the eastbound side of the interstate.
It was then struck by a pickup truck carrying two passengers. After this impact, her vehicle came to a rest and the truck came to a stop in the center outside lanes.
Subsequently, another vehicle was unable to avoid the collision, striking the third and fourth vehicles.
The 22-year-old driver of the first vehicle was taken to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The male in the second vehicle was seriously injured. The driver of the truck had minor injuries while the two male passengers were seriously injured.
The driver of the final vehicle who was unable to avoid the first collisions suffered from minor injuries. His passenger suffered from serious injuries.
All drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
