WPTV in West Palm Beach reports that one person has been killed, and a second person has been critically injured in a crash along US Highway 1 near Stuart on Sunday, June 20, 2021.
A spokesperson from the Florida Highway Patrol said in a statement to reporters that the fatal crash happened in the southbound lanes of the highway near Holly Street at approximately 4:18 a.m.
Officials say that two men from Guatemala were walking along the highway when they were struck by a pickup truck in the far right lane. Investigators believe that the two men, 28 and 31 years of age, crossed the roadway in front of the pickup truck. The driver, a 30-year-old woman, was unable to stop his vehicle before striking the two men.
The force of the impact sent one man into the highway’s right lane while the other man landed in the bicycle lane, which runs parallel to the roadway. The FHP said the driver stopped her vehicle immediately after the crash.
They took the two men to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. The 28-year-old man was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
At the time of the report, officials had released no details about where the 31-year-old man was taken; however, they said that he was being treated for critical injuries he suffered in the accident.
The accident is still currently under investigation.
