CBS Local News Atlanta reported recently that an elderly man was killed in St Petersburg on the evening of Thursday, February 18, 2021 in a tragic pedestrian accident when he was struck by an SUV as he attempted to cross a local roadway.
According to officials with the St Petersburg Police Department, the incident took place on Thursday, February 18, 2021 between 7:40 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Roosevelt Boulevard near the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and MLK North. An adult male, 63 years of age, was attempting to cross at the 10000 block of Roosevelt Boulevard, just west of when he stepped in front of and was struck by a 2017 Acura SUV driven by a woman 60 years of age as she was traveling east down the roadway.
The driver stopped immediately and was fully cooperative with authorities, but the victim was declared legally dead at the scene of the accident by Saint Petersburg Fire Rescue. The death was one of many pedestrian deaths that have motivated crosswalk advocates to push for improvements to pedestrian access in the Tampa Bay area. These advocates recently received a $26,000 grant from the Department of Transportation to study ways of reducing traffic fatality issues.
