Local 10 News reports that a Tesla Model X was torn apart and there were four people injured in a crash on Hallandale Beach Boulevard. The crash occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday morning and witnesses to the accident say that everyone involved is lucky to be alive.
A Nissan GTR ran a traffic light at the intersection of Three Islands Boulevard and Hallandale Beach Boulevard. It slammed into the rear of a Tesla Model X, demolishing the vehicle. Three people were taken from the scene to a nearby hospital. One of them had serious injuries. Parts from the Tesla slammed into a nearby Volkswagen. The back seat of the Tesla flew out and hit a nearby Mustang.
The driver of the Tesla was able to walk away from the crash.
The Tesla Model X is the first SUV to receive a perfect 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. Other SUVs have received a 5-star overall safety rating, but typically perform lower, such as 4-star in rollover tests. Since SUVs have a higher center of gravity, they are prone to rolling over. The electric-powered Tesla Model X has a heavy lithium-ion battery in the bottom of the car. This gives the Model X a lower center of gravity, which can lower the risk of a rollover crash. The Model X also was tested in side-collisions, head-on collisions, and skidding into an object such as a tree on its side. The tests revealed that people inside a Model X have a 93% chance of walking away from an accident without injury.
