A University of Miami student was hit and killed by an SUV early Sunday morning. The student was crossing a street on campus.
According to police, 19-year-old Taylor William Emmons, a sophomore at the University of Miami, was trying to cross San Amaro Drive outside of the Sigma Chi fraternity house around 1 a.m. Sunday morning.
Emmons was struck by 39-year-old Mary Suzanne Jean, who stopped and called 911. Emmons was taken to Doctor’s Hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
“We feel terrible. It was tragic, it was traumatizing, it was a reality check. You have to be safe,” said UM Freshman Justin Engle.
For its part, the University is urging students to be more cautious. “We want you to use common sense, but we also want you to obey the law and cross at a crosswalk,” said Officer Kelly Denham.
This is the second student hit and killed at the University of Miami this year. Jared Paul Jones, a 21-year-old student, was killed in a hit-and-run accident last month.
Police investigation into this crash is still ongoing. Our sympathies go out to all of those that have been affected by it.
